HEROES researchers work together across Europe to support smart regional resilience — combining expertise to better understand local challenges and develop practical solutions.
Research in HEROES is organised around real needs faced by our regions. Instead of working separately, researchers from nine institutions collaborate in Research PODs — thematic groups that bring together expertise from different countries and disciplines.
The alliance currently develops knowledge and applied research within these PODs:

– Care and Wellbeing
– Circular Economy
– Digital Transformation
– Education, Learning and Inclusion
– Regional Development
Each POD provides a simple way for researchers to connect, share insights, explore ideas, and prepare joint projects. This helps institutions understand similar challenges across regions and respond to them in a coordinated way.
The PODs also make it easier for organisations — companies, public authorities, NGOs, schools — to engage with researchers and collaborate on topics that matter locally.
