Stepping into an international environment for the first time can be both exciting and challenging, especially when real responsibility is involved. For one master’s student, participating in a one-week Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) in Vilnius became a defining moment for both personal and professional growth.

The programme brought together international teams to work on a real business assignment provided by a company. Beyond theoretical learning, the experience focused on practical application, cross-cultural collaboration, and the development of leadership skills in a dynamic environment.

Taking on Responsibility in a Multicultural Team

Before joining the programme, Silvie had limited experience leading an international team in an intensive mobility setting. Working with students from different academic backgrounds and cultural contexts required adaptability, open communication, and initiative.

The main challenges included coordinating younger bachelor’s students, managing team dynamics in a multicultural environment, and delivering a solution that would meet the expectations of a real company. Communication barriers also naturally emerged. Differences in working styles, expectations, and language nuances required patience and active engagement.

Rather than viewing these challenges as obstacles, they quickly became catalysts for development.

From Participant to Natural Leader

During the week, Silvie gradually stepped into a leadership and mentoring role. What initially began as simple participation evolved into taking responsibility for structuring tasks, guiding discussions, and helping team members align their contributions.

This shift was not about formal authority. Instead, it was about confidence, presence, and accountability. By actively engaging in discussions and facilitating cooperation within the group, leadership emerged organically.

The experience strengthened key skills such as coordination, decision-making, conflict resolution, and intercultural communication. Most importantly, it increased professional self-confidence and reinforced the ability to work effectively in diverse team environments.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

The programme combined academic learning with real-world exposure. The team worked on a business challenge directly connected to the needs of a company and had the opportunity to visit the organisation to better understand its internal processes.

Creative workshops, including interdisciplinary activities such as a music workshop, encouraged innovative thinking and collaboration beyond traditional academic boundaries. Cultural activities, including a city tour and tasting national specialties, further strengthened team bonding and intercultural understanding.

The week concluded with final presentations delivered in front of an expert committee. Presenting the team’s results added another valuable professional experience: translating ideas into structured arguments and confidently defending proposed solutions.

Lasting Impact

The value of the programme did not end with the final presentation. Its biggest impact lies in long-term personal and professional growth.

Silvie now applies her newly developed leadership skills in other academic projects and professional contexts. The experience strengthened her willingness to take initiative, actively contribute to team projects, and engage in international collaboration with confidence.

Equally important are the connections built during the week. International mobility programmes create communities that extend beyond the duration of the event, forming networks that can support future academic and career opportunities.

A Personal Milestone

What began as participation in an intensive mobility programme turned into a transformative experience. By stepping outside her comfort zone, embracing responsibility, and engaging in real project work, Silvie transformed challenges into opportunities for growth.

As she reflects on the experience, her advice to future participants is simple:

“Open your mind, put your fears aside, and seize the opportunity.”
