Study programmes

HEROES is shaping the next generation of study programmes by placing resilience at the core of learning. Across our alliance, nine higher education institutions are working together to create programmes that respond to real societal needs, regional priorities, and the skills required for a sustainable future.

As a first milestone, we have developed the HEROES Skills and Competences Need Map — a shared framework that identifies the competences essential for resilience and shows how they appear across our existing study programmes. The analysis highlights five competence domains that will shape the future of work and learning:

  • Digital Competence – from digital literacy to AI, data science, and cybersecurity
  • Green Skills & Sustainability Expertise – circular economy, climate adaptation, sustainable innovation
  • Adaptability & Lifelong Learning – problem-solving, collaboration, continuous upskilling
  • Innovation & Entrepreneurship – strategic thinking, leadership, business development
  • Nature’s Resilience – environmental science, water management, green technologies

This map helps us understand where we already have strong alignment and where new integration, collaboration, and innovation are needed.

Based on this foundation, HEROES partners are now exploring:

  • future-proof programme development aligned with resilience competences
  • joint courses and co-taught modules between partner institutions
  • mobility windows and shared learning pathways for students
  • stronger links between study programmes and regional ecosystems
  • new opportunities for microcredentials and lifelong learning

The Skills and Competences Need Map is not the final product — it is the starting point for transforming how programmes are designed, connected, and delivered across Europe.
